For the newly opened solo exhibition at NPAK, artist Rexy Tseng has created a multilayered installation ensemble that evokes global narratives while reflecting local cultural conditions. The entire exhibition serves as a crossroads between worldwide contemporaneity and the distinct Armenian “here and now.” The exhibition is open until April 5th. Catherine Chernova, an art critic and correspondent for Lava Media, spoke with the artist about his practice, motivations, key ideas, and the role of humor in his work.

A reverence for recent art history and the medium of painting extends throughout the exhibition. Tseng’s debt and esteem for painters like Luc Tuymans (b.1958) is evident in both his palette and perspective. But more canny is his formal and thematic relationship with 19th-century landscape painters like Caspar David Friedrich (1774 – 1840), 20th-century Expressionists like Chaïm Soutine (1893 – 1943), or even Pop artists like Wayne Thiebaud (1920 – 2021). Tseng uses an omnipresent aerial perspective with brushy strokes of paint applied in expansive passages of colour, with formal elements that emphasise the independence between artist, subject and viewer, as well as the materiality and essential objectness of painting.

Painting has survived successive revolutions in technological image-making, and its value has only grown with each one. From photography to television to digital media to social networks, each new wave of innovation has clarified painting's unique capacities: its embodiment of thought through material actions, its specific mechanisms of creating spatial complexity, density and ambiguity, its creation of meaning through myriad irreducible decisions. Now, as we witness another revolution with the rise of AI-generated imagery, Rexy Tseng's paintings offer a particularly timely reminder of these essential qualities.

For this exhibition, Tseng zooms in on the idea of la petite mort, or ‘the little death,’ a concept with multiple meanings ranging from the temporary loss of consciousness post-orgasm to the prefiguration of an unwanted future. The expression has also been diversely interpreted as a spiritual release, a moment of transcendence, and even the ultimate bliss of reading great literature. For his exhibition’s title, Tseng purposely uses the English translation in order to explore the interplay between academic connotations, contemporary usages, and his artistic reinterpretation.

《痛苦與歡愉》嘗試將現代社會裡的性與親密關係問題，與這些意識型態的內部邏輯扣連在一起。而問題不僅是前面所說的情慾自由化與市場化下的階級差異，還包括資本主義邏輯裡被大量產製的過剩慾望：如果維持資本主義體系運作最重要的核心驅力是人類永不枯竭的慾望，而這樣的慾望終將導致生產的過剩與資源的耗竭，那同樣的，這個不斷被鼓勵生成的慾望，在情慾的自由市場裡至少會導致兩種狀況。

在曾慶強的作品裡可以看見多層次的二元性隱含在其中，從他自身的成長歷程看起，東 / 西文化背景的交錯下促使他的價值觀不斷產生疑問與解構，也進而轉化到他的藝術創作上。就以《我們之後》系列為例，當中可以看他選擇透過靜態繪畫與動態裝置進行媒材上的對比外，在內容上也反應出對於文明世界矛盾的反思。

幾個月前，他的作品在 2020 臺北藝術博覽會 (Art Taipei) 的「MIT 新人特區」中短暫現身數日，受到許多收藏家的關注；之後他再度出現於同一年度的北美獎入圍者之中。在還沒有了解他之前，一頭長髮加上一身黑色皮夾克，很可能會被誤認為是一位搖滾歌手。

藝術家曾慶強（Rexy Tseng）青少年時移居至消費文化輸出重鎮的美國求學成長，其作品藉由重塑消費之「物」的所指（signified），展示藝術家自身與外部世界的「關係敘事」。曾慶強使用真空包裝保存伴隨著自己成長的布偶，使其定格在畫框中所創作的《它者》（The Other），在介紹中寫到布偶「生產於 1986 年」，而 1986 年同時也是藝術家的出生年份，在此「生產」便有了雙重意義，是自然生理系統中誕生的生命體，亦為消費工業體系中製造的產品。自然有機生命與人工無機之消費產品，二者間平行對立的存在關係，交會於曾慶強所述與布偶的互動——拉扯嚙咬、體液沾染、愛恨交織，直到人與「物」的邊界漸趨模糊。

曾慶強 (Rexy Tseng) 畢業於卡內基梅隆大學 (Carnegie Mellon University) 藝術系，並先後於加州大學洛杉磯分校 (UCLA) 多媒體設計研究所與英國牛津大學 (University of Oxford) 藝術研究所修習，參展足跡遍佈歐、美、亞洲各地。他擅長使用動力機械與平面藝術表現情感的交互關係與人生體悟。作品中略顯無奈的黑色幽默，加之風格的超現實與象徵性圖像語彙之使用，饒富趣味性。

2005 年，卡內基梅隆大學新生訓練結束後，陪伴小孩的父母從附近的旅館退房回家，留下我們一群十七八歲的少年。離父母的監控越遠，我們的情緒就越高昂，興奮、期待、未知、混合了賀爾蒙與秋季的濕度直衝腦頂。我和新認識的同學 RJ、Olga、Joe 坐在 Forbes Avenue 轉角的 Kiva Han 咖啡廳，有聲有笑地天馬行空。擺脫了高中時期的土樣，站在自主生活的開端，每一句年少輕狂都是未來的藍圖。香煙環繞著 Olga 的指尖，飄散於傍晚的月光，四位藝術新生緩緩地融化於互相的青澀愛慕中。看著他們的嘴唇、雙手、眼神，當下我感到微微的自卑。

Urban Spree 是座落於東柏林 Friedrichhain 區的複合式展演場所。身為柏林統一前遺留的建築，同時擁有帶著歷史疤痕的頹廢磚牆、當代迷彩的塗鴉、海報、以及貼紙。2017 年七月二十九號夏天晚上，約凌晨兩點鐘，我與洛杉磯朋友 Serena 和 William 三人來到這裡，參加一場通宵派對。

2010-2012 年間我在加州大學洛杉磯分校 (UCLA) 進修碩士，鑽研多媒體設計藝術 (Design Media Arts)。我住在全新完工的 720 Hilgard 研究生宿舍，除了有車位外，走路就可以到 Elon Musk 住的 Bel-Air 社區。Hilgard Ave 是規劃給 UCLA 姊妹會的一條路，環境整潔安全，每天我出門都會與成群的可愛女學生擦肩而過。那時我 23 歲，有獎學金跟助教補助，沒有學費困擾，在加州的新鮮空氣與金髮少女環繞中生活，陽光下開著自己的車，似乎整個洛杉磯都是我的迪士尼樂園。但在我 25 歲時，我決定放棄 MFA 碩士學位離開校園。

2010 年春天，剛從大學畢業，我和許多同學一樣，買了張單程機票，離開冰冷的匹茲堡，前往陽光燦爛的加州去找一個新開始。在矽谷，我很幸運地加入一間位於舊金山市的新創公司 Sifteo，這段經驗正面影響了我往後的事務觀點與做事方法。

2016 年美國總統大選結束後，我許多居住美國的朋友表現出各式的沮喪與無力。看到 Donald Trump 即將進入白宮，我內心也湧起了私人的傷感、憤怒、與不安等情緒。這股負面情緒的主要來源並不是黨派或政策理念，而是 Trump 所象徵的負面價值觀及其勾起的不好回憶。
